Some time back I worked for a company in Belgrade – their offices were actually in new Belgrade, the municipality built on the left bank of the Sava river from the 1950’s onwards.
It never ceased to fascinate me; maybe it was arriving from the airport in the dead of night and the following morning walking out in this strange, vibrant fully-formed city. The brutalist architecture never seemed forbidding; it was softened by the vegetation and the lives lead within its walls.
I always intended to make some paintings and took photos as I’d explore before and after work. Somehow the subject seemed to lend itself to a simple kind of tonal painting. Here are three small panels 30cm x 21cm that I finally got around to working on.
Il y a quelque temps, j’ai travaillé pour une entreprise à Belgrade – leurs bureaux se trouvaient dans le nouveau Belgrade, la municipalité construite sur la rive gauche de la rivière Sava à partir des années 1950.
Le lieu m’a toujours fasciné; peut-être c’était le décalage d’arriver de l’aéroport en pleine nuit puis le lendemain matin se retrouver dans cette ville étrange et pleine de vie. L’architecture brutaliste ne me semblait jamais pesante; elle était adouci par la dense végétation et les vies menées entre ses murs.
Je me baladais avant et après le travail, d’un quartier à l’autre. Je prenais des photos avec l’idée d’en faire des peintures. D’une manière ou d’une autre, le sujet semblait se prêter à une simple sorte de peinture tonale.
